Surya Foods
Service: LCA & PAS2060
Summary: Surya Foods, a renowned global food supplier, embarked on an ambitious sustainability journey with MyCarbon. They sought to market a carbon-neutral rice product, Laila Xtra: Extra Long Basmati, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability within the food industry.
Working closely with MyCarbon, Surya Foods underwent a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and PAS 2060, revealing that a significant portion of emissions was derived from methane produced during the farming process. This finding spurred a deeper investigation into the farming practices, seeking viable methods to reduce methane production.
The investigation led to a breakthrough; it was found that adopting more sustainable irrigation practices could reduce production emissions by approximately 25%. Moreover, it was recommended that customer incentives be investigated to reduce emissions associated with cooking the rice and waste at home, enhancing the product's overall sustainability profile.
Surya Foods' initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of their product showcases their progressive approach in aligning their business with sustainable practices. Their commitment to exploring and implementing changes across the entire product life cycle reflects a deep understanding of their environmental responsibility, setting a commendable example for the food industry.

Riot Labs
Service: LCA
Summary: Ben Jonhson, CEO of Riot Labs, has a very clear goal; he wants to create the most sustainable vape pen in existence.
However, vaping is not always exactly environmentally friendly; especially disposable vape pens. In fact, the Lithium found in all the vape pens thrown away every year in the UK could be combined to produce 1,200 EV car batteries. Quite an impact!
After initially approaching MyCarbon to ensure that their vape pen would be carbon-negative, Riot Squad quickly understood that their sustainability efforts would be more effective if they also calculated their carbon footprint across the entire business.
Gathering a broader insight into the emissions present within the business, as well as the lifecycle impact of the vape product, would allow the MyCarbon team to identify immediate quick wins and construct a realistic net zero Strategy.
As an added challenge, Riot Squad needed to complete this process in time for the global launch of the new vape pen.
MyCarbon is all about tackling challenges and this was a perfect fit for our ‘Calculate, Reduce & Offset’ process...
After the initial calculation phase identified quick emission reduction wins in Riot Squads business as a whole, the life cycle assessment of the vape pen highlighted a golden reduction opportunity...(surprise surprise!) the batteries. Like many vapes, the product is powered by a standard ‘not-exactly-environmentally-friendly' battery, accounting for 62% of the emissions alone.
For this device to become truly sustainable, we were going to have to power up the power management! The answer lay in a recycling mechanism that allows users to drop off their worn-out vape pens, which are dissembled by Riot Squad, so that the batteries could be recharged and placed into a new device.
As much as we’d like to shout a clear ‘yes’, we’re big fans of transparency and honesty, so that claim may be a bit too bold! However, not only did we help Riot Squad create a carbon-negative disposable vape pen and identify emissions across the entire business, we also managed to offset their emissions twice over.
And, just like Ben Johnson, we’re still eagerly working to pursue the dream of creating the sustainable vape pen to rule them all.
MyCarbon will be working with Riot Squad to create an SBTi (a science-based target initiative) which lays out a strategic plan to get Riot Squad to net zero and support them through this process, with reduction guidance and strategy, every step of the way.
The Northern Trust
Service: Ad hoc support, Consultancy
Summary: Northern Trust Paves the Way for an Industry-wide Voluntary Carbon Credit Ecosystem .
2023 – Northern Trust announces today plans for an industry-wide Voluntary Carbon Credit Ecosystem which would allow institutional investors to digitally access carbon credits from leading project developers.
The announcement follows Northern Trust’s successful milestone of completing fully automated transactions on the digital carbon credit platform it has developed with carbon removal project developers including Storegga, Go Balance and ReGen III and institutional buyers
The ecosystem utilizes digital technology including Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to connect institutional investors with carbon credit suppliers who are focused on capturing greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide. The fully digital platform allows users to purchase carbon credits directly from developers and offset these against their carbon footprint.
Pete Cherecwich, president of Asset Servicing at Northern Trust, said: “This new development from Northern Trust’s Digital Assets and Financial Markets team represents a
significant milestone toward delivering a market-leading platform able to support a diverse range of digital assets. Allowing institutional clients to access carbon credits and doing our part to help these firms along their carbon offsetting journey is important for the future.”
Justin Chapman, global head of Digital Assets and Financial Markets, said: “The use of digital technology to manage the lifecycle of carbon credits gives project developers full control and transparency into the life of the carbon credit, including who is allowed to purchase, the price paid, and when it is retired.”
TBC Project Developer, said: “Northern Trust’s approach to digitizing the voluntary carbon credit market has the potential to enable project developers such as [name quote organisation] to enhance our focus on carbon capture initiatives by streamlining time consuming administration tasks. The solution will make it easier to track, manage and transact our registry of carbon credits, enabling full transparency into the end-to-end lifecycle of a voluntary carbon credit.”
Project developers will meet the buyers of voluntary carbon credits via an on-line platform. Legal agreements are generated using smart contracts via the Avvoka legal contract tool with the outputs of those legal agreements driving full straight-through transfer and settlement of the digital credits for fiat currency on the specified settlement date.
Northern Trust has been working directly with a number of diverse project developers on its initial minimal viable product (MVP) including: Storegga, a Direct Air Capture company developing a plant in Scotland that will capture when at scale over one million tons of CO2 per year; Go Balance, a REDD+ project developer that supports the Trocano Araretama REDD+ Project in the Municipality of Borba in Brazil and ReGen III, a clean-tech firm recycling used motor oil into high-grade group III synthetic lubricants, which is developing a Texas recycling facility that aims to prevent the release of 900,000 tons of CO2 per year from entering the atmosphere.
Transactions were initiated on the MVP in a fully automated way by MyCarbon, a UK based Carbon Consultancy firm; White Star Capital, a global multi-stage technology investment firm; and Northern Trust. These real transactions were completed on the new platform at the end of
December 2022. Further development of the platform is planned in 2023, subject to securing appropriate regulatory approvals.

BrewDog
Service: Consultancy, Communication
Summary: As the effects of ongoing climate change continue to make themselves felt, Brewdog (famous brewing disruptors) realised they needed to ensure they were growing their business and profits in a way that didn’t put the future of the planet (and their customers!) at risk.
Initially tasked with helping BrewDog deliver effective sustainability communication, MyCarbon was quickly involved in consulting and writing the copy for BrewDog’s MEGA (Make Earth Great Again) report.
A report which needed to do something radical.
Whilst the initial reports had focused on BrewDog taking a short-term offset approach to carbon neutrality, this one needed to lay out a longer-term reduction plan that investors, customers, and employees could understand and support...
In line with MyCarbon’s mantra (“You can't manage, what you haven't measured!”), we worked with BrewDog to capture and quantify the climate action projects they had in place (and were embarking on) within the report. Through evaluating the success of previous sustainability initiatives, alongside top climate scientist Professor Mike Berners-Lee, the report celebrated existing successful initiatives and importantly identified both quick wins in future carbon reductions, and more complex areas where reduction is required.
Our experience discussing the (often controversial) issue of climate change and guiding companies (like BrewDog) through reduction journeys, meant we were well suited to advising on key language and communication methods that would emotionally resonate with the audience. MyCarbon often finds that many companies and teams will try to over promote sustainability work they have completed or started, which can later lead to issues of accused 'greenwashing' when targets are not exactly met, change or come under further scrutiny, whether or not that was the companies true intention.
As the world’s first carbon negative brewery, Brewdog is now going a step further. Certified as a B-Corp and restoring their very own forest (to ensure long term natural carbon offsetting), their work with MyCarbon on MEGA report 3.0 is leading a shift in sustainability strategy; from offsetting to reduction.
Through emission reduction activities such as (but not limited to) CO₂ recovery, developing an AD plant and utilising green electricity, BrewDog aims to acheive a 35% CO₂e emission reduction by 2023 compared to a 2019 baseline.
MyCarbon is excited to continue their work with BrewDog to enhance their sustainability marketing and future reporting, ensuring that lovers of their products can enjoy them with peace of mind for many years to come.

CA Global Partners
Service: GHG/LCA
Dan Main (Director): CA Global Partners and MyCarbon worked together on a process to measure the positive impact of auctions of used equipment and retail returns. The team at MyCarbon were a pleasure to work with, and their methodology and approach was rigorous, transparent and consistent. The team also worked with us to come up with a methodology that was appropriate for our use without being excessive in cost.
MyCarbon provided us with a method of monitoring the carbon from auctions in a way that could be easily scaled up, and using data that was accessible. They also were flexible in their approach, and through discussions with them, we were able to create a method that used readily accessible data and also reflected the reduced utility in second-hand assets as compared to new items.
As a result of our work with MyCarbon, we have been able to report the carbon avoided to our clients and the wider public on multiple auctions, setting a benchmark for sustainable surplus asset management programs, as well as help our clients to consider more factors on the disposal of used assets beyond the price achieved. I already look forward to the next time we work with Toby, James and the rest of the team at MyCarbon!
Australia Post Global (APG)
Service: GHG, Supplier Engagement, Net-zero, SBTi
Testimonial: “We started APG sustainability journey with a different company which helped us scope the first milestones of our ESG approach back in 2018.
Since then, the industry standards, new regulations and our requirements have evolved; and we needed to fast track our ideas, create our own ESG strategy as well as work on our key initiatives.
Scoping and collecting information from our suppliers and customers were not good enough anymore. Hence MyCarbon x THG Eco value proposition felt the right fit for APG sustainability next steps.
We chose to partner with MyCarbon x THG Eco as the overall proposal was meeting all criteria in terms of deliverables and commercials. We indeed looked at other solutions but they either were too expensive or did not meet our requirements totally.
On top of this, we felt MyCarbon x THG Eco was a great culture fit with very inspiring and knowledgeable people.
So far, it’s been a great experience to work with MyCarbon x THG Eco and hope we can keep growing the partnership and work on more initiatives our own customers need support on.”
