What is offsetting?
These projects include renewable energy initiatives, reforestation, and advanced technologies like direct air carbon capture and storage, found worldwide. Offsetting complements other carbon reduction efforts to achieve net-zero or carbon neutrality goals. Offset types can be grouped into three categories:
Emission Reduction or Avoidance: Focus on reducing GHG emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy, or cleaner fuel alternatives. Examples: solar/wind power, landfill methane capture, and clean cookstove installations.
Nature Based: Capture and store CO2 through natural processes like afforestation, reforestation, and improved forest management. Enhance carbon-absorbing capacity in ecosystems (forests, wetlands) and store captured carbon in biomass and soils.
Carbon Removal: Capture and store CO2 through engineered solutions like direct air capture and storage (DACS) or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). These are emerging technologies for long-term carbon removal.
How does my business actually engage in offsetting?
Each carbon credit represents the reduction, avoidance, or sequestration of one metric ton of CO2 equivalent (t CO2e). The VCM offers a range of offset projects, certified by independent third-party standards like the UK Woodland Carbon Code, VERRA Gold Standard, or Puro.
However, it’s important to note that the VCM has its challenges. Carbon credits come in different forms and levels of certainty, leading to debates about their value and evaluation methods. To address this uncertainty, a portfolio approach is recommended, allowing buyers to balance risks and potentially resolve uncertainties over time. Buyers can choose from any combination of the listed offset types.
Transparency is crucial in any offsetting approach. Both buyers and sellers should acknowledge the inherent uncertainty of carbon credits and focus on understanding the projects linked to the traded credits.
Expertise and Credibility in Carbon Trading
MyCarbon was a founding partner of the Carbon Coalition for UK Universities, which established best practices in carbon trading.
The Carbon Coalition is governed by an Advisory Board consisting of experts, practitioners, and academics from leading UK universities. The Board establishes scoring criteria and methodology, developed by MyCarbon based on The Offsetting Briefing, to assess offsetting projects for inclusion in the Carbon Coalition Portfolio. MyCarbon evaluates sustainable, robust, and cost-effective projects to form the Portfolio. The main objective of credit scoring is to ensure that purchasing and retiring these credits drive genuine positive change in emissions reduction.
Since 2018, MyCarbon has offered carbon trading consultancy services to voluntary carbon market participants, including buyers and sellers. These services focus on qualitative and quantitative risk mitigation, ensuring fair value for both parties involved in a trade.
